Overview

CivicBases.org is a public information resource. We collect minimal data necessary to operate the site and do not sell, share, or monetize personal information. This policy explains what we collect and why.

Information we collect

We collect the following categories of information:

  • Usage data. Standard server logs including IP addresses, page views, referring URLs, and browser type. This data is used solely for site performance and security.
  • Search queries. Search terms entered on this site may be logged in aggregate to improve search quality. Queries are not associated with individual users.
  • Approximate location. We use a third-party IP geolocation service (ipapi.co) to detect your approximate state in order to personalize the browse experience. We do not store this information.

What we do not collect

  • We do not currently require registration or accounts.
  • We do not currently collect names or email addresses except when you voluntarily contact us.
  • We do not currently use tracking pixels, behavioral advertising, or cross-site tracking.
  • We do not collect or store sensitive civic data such as voter registration status.

Cookies

We use only essential session cookies necessary for site functionality. We do not use advertising or analytics cookies from third parties. You may disable cookies in your browser without affecting your ability to use this site.

Third-party services

This site uses the following third-party services:

  • Google Fonts — for typography. Google may log font requests. See Google's privacy policy.
  • ipapi.co — for IP-based location detection. We request only country and region information. See ipapi's privacy policy.
  • Netlify — our hosting provider. Netlify processes standard web traffic. See Netlify's privacy policy.
  • Twilio — our SMS delivery provider. Phone numbers you provide for text message notifications are transmitted to Twilio solely for message delivery. See Twilio's privacy policy.

Text message communications (SMS)

CivicBases offers an optional SMS notification service that sends civic reminders, including voter registration deadlines, election date alerts, and registration status updates.

  • Consent and opt-in. You may opt in by entering your mobile number and checking the consent box on a CivicBases site. By opting in, you consent to receive recurring automated text messages from CivicBases at the number provided. Consent is not a condition of using any CivicBases service.
  • What we send. Voter registration deadline reminders, election date notifications, and registration status confirmations. We do not send promotional or marketing messages. We do not sell or share your phone number with third parties for marketing purposes.
  • Message frequency. Varies based on upcoming election dates, typically a few messages per month during election season.
  • Costs. Message and data rates may apply depending on your carrier. CivicBases does not charge for SMS.
  • Opt out. Reply STOP to any message to unsubscribe. You will receive one confirmation and no further messages will be sent. You may also contact privacy@civicbases.org to request removal.
  • Help. Reply HELP to any message, or contact privacy@civicbases.org.
